Polyphasic Sleep Options

In case you’re not “in the know,” polyphasic sleep is basically just a fancy term for napping.  As many Paleo adherents would point out, taking naps is a healthy and quite natural practice among mammals like us.  It’s arguably in our genes, but the Industrial Revolution beat it out of (most of) us.

This informative blog entry from Dustin Curtis earlier this year talks about some interesting approaches to polyphasic sleep, each with its own pros and cons.  If you’re going to radically tinker with your sleep schedule, it goes without saying that you really need to do your research beforehand.  (Sleep as much as you need while doing your research.  You don’t have to come up with a final plan tonight before bed.)

At the very least, you should read up on it in Wikipedia, where they even cover the efforts of bloggers who’ve experimented with polyphasic sleep schedules (such as The Everyman and The Uberman) and then shared their experiences and results online.

If you’ve got the hankering for more detail, see if your local library has any of the works by the leading expert in this field, Claudio Stampi.  Another good online resource on the “Facts and Myths” around polyphasic sleep is provided by Dr. Piotr Wozniak and can be found here.
